What Is Somatic Therapy for Dogs?
Somatic therapy for dogs is a gentle, body-centered approach that supports both emotional and physical well-being. It incorporates consent-based touch, co-regulation, proprioceptive movement and play, and species-typical regulating behaviors such as snuffling, chewing, and licking. Rather than targeting surface-level behaviors, this work engages the nervous system directly to address the underlying causes of dysregulation.

By prioritizing safety, connection, and compassion, somatic therapy helps dogs gradually expand their window of tolerance—the range in which they can engage with their environment without becoming overwhelmed. Dogs are supported in practicing natural, species-appropriate behaviors including sniffing, stretching, yawning, and shaking off, allowing them to relearn effective self-regulation.

The result is a more grounded dog who feels secure in their body, navigates everyday challenges with greater ease, and experiences a deeper sense of connection with their human companion.
